Croup
Croup is a condition caused by the narrowing of the upper part of the airways and the larynx as a result of inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the airways. It occurs in children and symptoms of croup include a barking cough and a high pitched sound on inspiration. The child’s voice usually becomes hoarse and in severe cases breathing may become difficult. A fever may also be present due to the body’s attempt to fight the infection.
Organisms which cause an infection of the larynx and upper respiratory tract are usually bacterial or viral. If your child presents with these symptoms then it is important to monitor the child closely and if your child shows any signs of difficulty breathing then you should consult your healthcare practitioner. Encouraging your child to inhale cool mist, from a humidifier, may help reduce the swelling and will make breathing easier for the child. Usually the child’s body is able to successfully fight the infection without life threatening complications, however if your child’s symptoms persist for longer than three days then please consult your healthcare practitioner.
