Chiropractic for Breech Presentations
Chiropractic care involves the maintenance of the spinal column, discs, nerves, bones and ligaments related to the spine without the intervention of drugs or surgery. It involves the art and science of moving the joints of the body, especially the spine, which reduces stress on the spinal nerves thereby promoting health throughout the body.
Chiropractors are trained to work on pregnant women with some chiropractors specialising in pre- and post- natal care and there are no known contra-indications to receiving chiropractic treatment during your pregnancy.
During pregnancy, chiropractic care can help to cope with the back discomforts that many pregnant women experience. Your body has normal biomechanical and structural components that enable everyday movement to occur. During pregnancy these biomechanical structures move to accommodate the growth of the baby. The uterus sits in the uterine bowl of the pelvis and as the uterus grows so the pelvis and the ligaments of the pelvis need expand accordingly. The pelvis and its ligaments are normally in a balanced state but if they are not they can cause a condition known as constraint of the uterus which limits the space for the baby in utero. A misaligned pelvis can also make it difficult for the baby to move into the best position possible for delivery and may result in a breech presentation.
A specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment, called the Webster technique, is used by chiropractors to establish balance of the pelvis and reduce undue stress to the uterus and supporting ligaments. This results in a balanced pelvis which makes it easier for the breech baby to turn naturally.
When consulting your chiropractor, check that he/she is familiar with the Webster technique.
