Nails
Poor nutrition often results in a lack of strength of the bones and nails. Weak nails may break, tear and flake. If a nail breaks close to its base it may cause a considerable amount of pain.
Nutritional disorders that affect the nails are a lack of calcium, anaemia and vitamin D and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. A lack of oxygen exposure due to continuous use of nail varnish or false nails also decreases the nails strength.
Continuous use of harsh chemicals (such as soaps, thinners, bleach, nail varnish remover) may strip the nails of their nutrients, which in turn affects their strength. Avoiding such substances or using gloves when working with substances reduces the frequency of contact of the chemicals by your nails. An under active thyroid can also cause your nails to weaken.
