Hayfever
Hayfever is the allergic reaction to inhaled pollens in the air which is usually experienced more severely in certain seasons (spring, autumn). It causes runny noses, sneezing, headaches, nasal congestion, itching and red eyes. Occasionally some individuals who are particularly sensitive to pollen may present with other symptoms such as skin allergies, nose bleeds, difficulty breathing and a fever.
Determining the exact cause of the allergy is very useful as often the cause may be avoidable or precautionary measures can be taken. During the mornings, the pollen levels are the highest, as a result many people with severe hayfever avoid going outdoors in the morning. Avoiding pollen can severely affect a person's quality of life as they may become house bound and use air conditioners instead of opening windows. This may result in a lack of fresh air and outdoor activities and may result in feelings of depression. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if your symptoms persist for longer than six weeks.
