Pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensation that varies intensity and causes much discomfort. The perception of pain is a self preservation technique that helps protect us from further damage or injury. Pain tells us that what we have done has caused injury and we should not do it again. It is also our body’s way of informing us that there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Chronic pain is pain that accompanies an illness that lasts for a long period of time, such as the pain that occurs with arthritis. Chronic pain is usually not as intense as acute pain, however there may be factors which worsen the chronic pain an increase the intensity. Chronic pain can be very debilitating and draining and can lead to depression, anxiety and withdrawal. It may also lead to the frequent use of painkillers, some of which have side effects and may be addictive.

Pain may also be psychologically induced, and may therefore occur with no apparent physical cause. This may be a symptom of depression. Hypochondriacs (people who worry excessively and obsess over their health, believing and fearing that they have an illness) may experience pain and pain may also be a method used by some people, especially children, to get attention. If the cause of the pain is emotional or mental then healing the emotions and mind is vital in order to avoid any further damage.

Whether the pain is acute or chronic, severe or mild, physical or emotional, the cause must be treated. If you are in pain or experience pain that is severe, debilitating or chronic then it is advisable that you consult a healthcare practitioner.
