Itching
An itch is an unpleasant sensation of the skin which causes a strong desire to scratch the area. The cause is thought to be an over stimulation of the nerve endings in the skin. This has been linked to histamine release in the area of the itch. The exact neurological pathways resulting in an itching understanding are poorly understood. Itching can be localised or there may be a generalised itch all over the body. Obvious causes of a localised itch include mosquito bites and stings, healing wounds, allergies and chemical irritation of the area.
Generalised itching may have causes which require a more thorough investigation. They include liver disorders, medications, diabetes and hormonal imbalance. More simple causes of a generalised itching sensation are dry skin, sunburn, skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema. Itching may also be due to emotional states of stress. Due to the wide range of causes of itching, you should consult your healthcare practitioner if your symptoms last longer than two weeks.
